Brakes Finally Finished!

 After all the work last year on the brakes, she still wasn't stopping right. So in January we stripped her down again. The brake shoes were fouled, so after a bit of heating and sanding we got rid of the gunk and set about seeing what had been happening. It turned out I was a little over enthusiastic with the copper grease in the brake adjuster. 

After a really good clean and a damn good bleed the pedal was hard, but still not where I wanted it to be. 

The brake adjusters are fairly rudimentary, but require a lot of pressure to seat the shoes against the drums properly. I had not realised just how much pressure was needed! A few more adjustments were needed.

We took her for a road run and gave the brakes a good test (Which were binding to begin with) and I have got them right where I want them now. 

First heavy test and I got a gut full of steering wheel and everything from the crew shelf ended up on the floor.

We are now busy getting ready for our shows this year with some more maintenance and a bit of painting in the cab.

Well, we bought a Green Goddess.... Why? I hear you ask? Well, I was looking for a rolling project and my previous project ( lashmidget.blogspot.com ) only had two seats, no good for taking the family out - so any addition needed 6 seats.  After several car shows, steam rallies and a good chunk of Googling (and some very helpful conversations with friends - you know who you are) a fire engine became the natural choice.  Significantly more consultation of online resources followed (Googling!) and i was surprised just how much choice there was!  I had always wanted a 4x4 and a 'military' vehicle add to that the fire engine dynamic and the Bedford RHLZ Self Propelled Pump was the perfect choice.  Curiously the Goddess is neither a fire engine or a military vehicle rather its a Home Office Auxiliary Fire Service pump designed for relay pumping water over many miles from lakes and rivers into Nuclear Bomb stricken cities during the cold war. Fundraising!

  The Whittlesey Sports Association hosts a great event called the Big Bash. Its hosted on a sports field with a canal at the back.....  We take Tiny along and drop in the suction hose into the canal and raise money for the Firefighters charity.  www.firefighterscharity.org.uk   We set up a football goal with targets and use the first aid hoses for the kids to have a squirt.  Then on the way home we had a proper squirt!

New Tyres!

  Early in 2021 the legislation changed on tyres on large vehicles and they needed to be less than ten years old, or on historic vehicles be able to pass inspection.  The tyres which were on Tiny unfortunately were in pretty rough shape in places so I elected to switch them off.  Bar grip tyres were only available second hand from brakers yards and did not fill me with confidence. After some research I found a stock of a slightly larger tyre Goodyear G388's with wheels fitted that are a direct bolt on replacement. They are off old army trucks and were the spare wheels, while the wheels themselves are a little ropey, the tyres themselves have not seen a road, still got the mould marks on!
